- The tea in Rwanda is well known all over the world for its infusion and enhanced brightness. Rwanda Mountain Tea produces some of the finest teas in Rwanda by investing in tea processing facilities, expert monitoring and guidance in crop production.
- Besides producing and trading tea, Rwanda Mountain Tea Ltd is a key private investor in renewable energy. It has to date put up 2 hydro power plants along Giciye River that supply 8 MW to the national grid. It is in the process of building another plant on the same river with a capacity of 7.2 MW. In other related developments, Rwanda Mountain Tea Ltd has signed concession agreements with the Government of Rwanda on 2 existing micro-hydropower plants to generate an additional 4 MW.
- Rwanda Mountain Tea Ltd is an investor in tea plantations and tea processing facilities. In August 2006, the Government of Rwanda under the privatization policy sold to Rwanda Mountain Tea controlling shares (90 %) of two tea estates of Nyabihu and Rubaya – both in the North Western region of Rwanda.
- Tea Importers is a family-owned business headquartered in Westport, CT that was started by Joseph Wertheim in 1958. The company buys teas from most of the tea producing countries in the world, which it sells to major tea packers and blenders as well as specialty tea companies.
- Tea Importers is also the majority shareholder of SORWATHE LTD., an award winning tea factory in Rwanda founded in 1975. The tea processed by the factory is grown on the SORWATHE-owned plantation of 284 hectares, as well as on another 930 hectares owned by ASSOPTHE, a Rwandan cooperative that represents over 3,500 small farmers. SORWATHE employs 3,000 Rwandans in the factory and fields. It produces approximately 6.5 million pounds (3 million Kilograms) of high quality black, green, oolong, organic and specialty teas each year for sale around the world.
- Karongi Tea Factory Limited is a Rwandan company, 100 percent privately owned and its principal business is tea growing, processing and marketing. The Tea factory and the tea plantations are located in Karongi District (Kibuye), in the western Province of Rwanda. The factory operates on an area of more than 2000 hectares of Tea Plantation.
- To promote the tea sector, participating in the improvement of the economy at national level and the level of the farmers of the district of KARONGI, within the framework of realization of the objectives of Economic Development and Poverty Reduction Strategy of the Government of Rwanda.
- Karongi tea factory is designed to accommodate the production of Black CTC tea (3 CTC lines), Green tea and orthodox tea. Initially, Karongi tea factory will produce and offer for sale at the Mombasa weekly tea auctions “Garden Fresh” pure Rwanda CTC Black tea in bulk form under the tea garden name “Karongi”. Once the garden mark is established, Karongi will embark on valve addition to tea, followed by the production of green tea and orthodox tea.
- Tea growing in Rwanda started in 1952, Rwandan tea is planted on hillsides at high altitude between 1,900 and 2,500 m, and on well drained marshes at an altitude of between 1,550 and 1,800 m. Today tea industry is comprised of fourteen operational factories and two tea projects.
- Most tea processed in Rwanda is black tea (CTC), however green tea and orthodox tea is also processed in small quantities. Spicy tea is also processed on order for our esteemed customer’s requirements.
- The production of tea has increased steadily, from 60 tons of black tea in 1958, 1,900 tons in 1990, 14,500 tons in 2000 and reaching at a peak of 24,800 in the year 2014.
- Gisovu is situated in the Karongi District of the western province in Rwanda about 4 hours drive from the capital city Kigali. Gisovu is situated at an altitude of 7,500 feet above sea level and close to the furtherest source of the River Nile in the nearby Nyungwe Forest.
- Gisovu has ideal growing conditions for producing some of the finest teas in the world which have an international following and are highly sought after for their briskness, flavour and exceptional quality.
